  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Coach Z -- Tolstoy brilliantly merges his fictitious characters with these events : Such a classic. Don't give up in the first 10% of the book. Initially you wonder where this is leading but realize that it is setting up characters that play a major role throughout. Also know that this is a history of Russia/France relations during 1805-1813 which includes Napoleon's march to Moscow making it a centerpiece of the novel. It is worth giving yourself a short review of the history of these years and Napoleon's term as Premier of France. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2017 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Anthony S. -- More than worth the time and effort : At the outset, I found myself continually asking... Why is this a classic? He (Tolstoy) is just a story teller. A bit wordy, but not really earth shattering. I wondered if something was perhaps lost in the translation. But I slogged on, and on and on... Maybe I should have started with the final prologue (who has more than one prologue?) but, I confess, without the story line, the machinations of men and women, small and great--the conclusions would have lost much of their impact. From and to this current age where it seems that there are no absolutes, his ability to cut through much of the fluff to the underlying truth was actually refreshing. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from M@rk -- Masterpiece for the ages : Okay, once in your life you need to read this book. Just put it on your bucket list and then when the time comes, read it. You'll gain insight into the world of Napoleonic Europe but more importantly, you'll gain insight into the human condition and the very meaning of life itself. Leo Tolstoy provides a unique man-on-the-scene perspective from his 19th-century vantage point which puts you right there in the action. The many noble and ignoble characters that Tolstoy provides prove to be rich and multifaceted as you follow their lives through times of war and peace. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- but it paints such a great picture of the events of 1805-1820 in Russia and ... : It's hard to write anything original about such a classic. Yes, it's very long, but it paints such a great picture of the events of 1805-1820 in Russia and what goes on in parallel in society. The psychological portraits are superb, with a good dose of cynicism thrown in. Tolstoy periodically gives us a tutorial on his theory of history (events are preordained, famous figures are just pawns, and their supposed "genius" or "chance" have nothing to do with success or failure) and this gets repetitive and tiresome. That's the only thing that detracts in my opinion from this masterpiece. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2017 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Megan Giles -- A treasure : You want good literature, this is not an easy place to start but it well worth the effort for the book nerds like me. Long and epic and sad, this is a love story about young people who make bad choices. The details of the war with France, the many deaths, the bizarre class structure where the characters are princes and counts and yet not royalty, it is all so far removed from our modern world. But the deep painful love they experience is something we all know and it resounds in these pages. Worth the author's dismissive opinions of Napoleon and his atavistic views of government. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Read as Challenge, Delighted with Journey, Surprising : I was delighted at the pace, depth, and detail Tolstoy brought to a subject I had little background on. Was delighted 2/3rd through with revelation his characters come to, especially in faith and living. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from MaitlandMike -- A Classic for all ages : Is there really anything new under the sun? A 150 year old novel of a history of 210 years ago would tell me "no". This is more than war/peace. It is that. But it is also love/hate, youth/age, pride/humility, searching/finding, destiny/free will, sincerity/pretense, upstairs/downstairs. A bucket list item to read; thank you Covid19 for presenting the prime opportunity. Thank you Leo Tolstoy for characters that nicely become very 3 dimensional in a paragraph or page and yet you keep the story moving along. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ashley Wo -- Classic : Classic and must read for everyone! I don't like to write too much in book reviews because I feel that in order to adequately write a review, I would have to give away information that would be key to plot. I don't like to be the person to give away spoilers. Therefore my book reviews are always very short and only say a few things in order to tell you, book reviews are much to subjective and I never read a book review before I read a book. I read a book based on what the book is about which I don't read a review to get. If you want more information, buy the book and read it. :) ( Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2016 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Latika Parekh -- Excellent book to read but pages were torn : It is such a masterpiece to read and when u reach a part and see pages missing, pages torn it is heart breaking. I have missed the exchange window on this one but learnt a lesson that even Amazon cannot be blocked ndly trusted. Check every book cover to cover that minute you receive it. I waited till I started reading the book and found torn pages .. if you guys can still do something about an exchange on this book it will be highly appreciated. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from MR T H BLOOMFIELD -- So far my favourite translation. : It would be foolish to review War and Peace other than to confirm that it is justifiably regarded as one of the greatest books ever written. Tolstoy can go on a bit and is not always right. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 21, 2018 )

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from M. Lawton -- I can see now why it's one of the greats... : How often do we hear books/reviews/emails etc being compared to War and Peace? I reached a point of deciding to read the book to find out what made it great and I'm really enjoying it. It helps that there was a TV drama series made of the book a few years back, and that has helped me to picture certain characters, but the book gives so much more insight and detail into why certain things occur and a greater understanding of the individuals and why they're like they are. It does take a long time to read it, especially if you only have time to read a couple of chapters a night, but it's worth it. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 6, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from D. Herriot -- Thoroughly readable - if you follow this advice! : I am only just over 50% of the way through War and Peace having started it many times before and only got about into the first 20 pages before I gave up trying to keep tabs on all the various characters with their complex Russian names. Having watched the BBC adaptation recently I decided to give it another go on my Kindle (thus avoiding the discouraging prospect of 1024 pages) and knowing that I would be able to visualize characters from the BBC's excellent production - I even printed off mugshots as a reminder. It worked. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 4, 2016 )
